ROME TRAVEL GUIDE

Rome, the eternal city, is undeniably one of the most historical and touristic destinations in the world, with its ancient ruins, grand piazzas, and iconic landmarks like the Colosseum and Vatican City.

FIRST THINGS FIRST

How do I get to Rome?

A reliable driver is key - WhatsApp Gianluca directly +39 39394 286 02

But as a Roman, I know there's another side to this city, one filled with hidden gems waiting to be discovered. To explore Rome like a local, skip the tourist traps and venture into Trastevere for authentic Roman trattorias, like Da Enzo al 29, where the owner Claudio might just surprise you with an extra pour of wine.

For vintage lovers, stop by Pifebo in Monti, where Giulia, the owner, will guide you to the quirkiest treasures. Whether it’s savoring the best cacio e pepe or unearthing a one-of-a-kind accessory, Rome’s charm lies in these intimate, off-the-beaten-path encounters.

So, come with me, and let me guide you to the heart of Rome, where its true magic lives.

WHEN TO COME & Where to stay...

The best season to come to Rome is off season or just before the high season begins so that would be Spring time anytime between April and very beginning of July, July and August are packed with tourists and it can get a little overwhelming. Another personal Favorite time of the year in Rome is Septmeber and October the temperature is just fantastic and same thing as spring Autum is just magical in Rome.

If you're planning to stay in Rome, two of the best areas to consider are Trastevere and Centro Storico.

Trastevere offers a vibrant, youthful atmosphere with bustling streets, charming cafes, and a lively nightlife scene. Perfect for those who want to immerse themselves in Rome’s funky and bohemian vibe, it’s a hotspot for both tourists and locals. As for Centro Storico, it’s ideal if you're after a more classic Roman experience. Here, you’ll find yourself surrounded by iconic landmarks like Piazza di Spagna and Fontana di Trevi, with everything in walking distance. Staying in Centro Storico means you’ll be at the heart of history, almost like living in an open-air museum.

For accommodation, Airbnb offers some fantastic options. In Trastevere, you can find charming properties like a lovely loft with a terrace that’s just a short walk from the Tiber River, perfect for soaking in the local vibe. If you prefer being closer to the action, Centro Storico offers elegant, centrally located apartments, such as those near Piazza Navona or the Pantheon.

You can browse through these wonderful listings on Airbnb to find a place that suits your style and budget.

SAVORING ROME

A Journey Through Its Food Markets and Culinary Treasures

When exploring the culinary heart of Rome, there's no better place to start than Mercato Rionale Cola di Rienzo, a bustling food market renowned for its authenticity and unparalleled freshness. Tucked away in a vibrant corner of the city, this market is where locals and savvy travelers converge to experience the best produce Rome has to offer.

If you find yourself on the last day of your Roman adventure and in need of fresh vegetables, make a beeline for Maurizio’s stand. With a warm smile and a twinkle in his eye, Maurizio is always happy to help you pick the ripest tomatoes or the crispest greens.

Be sure to ask about his homemade olive oil, a product he takes immense pride in. One taste, and you’ll understand why it’s a local favorite.

JUST AN HOUR FROM ROME

Fregene, where culinary bliss meets the sea

Fregene is Rome’s breezy beachside escape, just a short 30-minute drive or train-and-bus combo from the city, perfect for a quick getaway to soak up that much-needed winter sun. This laid-back coastal gem shines even in the cooler months, offering a tranquil vibe, golden sunsets, and a deliciously salty breeze. But let’s talk food, because Fregene is a seafood lover’s paradise. The town is dotted with fresh fish restaurants where you can savor the spaghetto alle vongole of your dreams, perfectly al dente pasta, briny clams, and a whisper of garlic that will make you swoon. And since I want you to have the best experience possible, here are my top three restaurants where you CANNOT go wrong.

📍 Albachiara Fregene - Spiaggia e Ristorante

Albachiara Fregene, Spiaggia e Ristorante, is the ultimate seaside haven where laid-back vibes meet top-notch dining. With its toes-in-the-sand charm and stunning sea views, it’s the perfect spot for a chilled meal. The spaghetto alle vongole here is legendary, fresh, briny clams paired with perfectly cooked pasta and a dash of sunshine in every bite. Quirky fact? Albachiara is named after a famous Italian song by Vasco Rossi, making it a true ode to relaxed coastal living. Come for the food, stay for the sunsets, you won’t regret it!

📍La Scialuppa Da Salvatore

La Scialuppa Da Salvatore, nestled right on the Fregene shoreline, is a seafood lover’s dream come true. With its rustic charm and unbeatable sea views, it’s the kind of place where every meal feels like a mini vacation. Their spaghetto alle vongole is pure perfection, packed with fresh clams, a kiss of garlic, and just the right touch of olive oil—simple, yet unforgettable. Fun fact? “Scialuppa” means lifeboat in Italian, a fitting name for a spot that will rescue you from bland meals forever. Whether you’re here for lunch under the winter sun or a romantic sunset dinner, this is coastal dining at its finest.

📍 Il Patio

Il Patio in Fregene is the perfect blend of cozy elegance and culinary excellence. With its warm, inviting atmosphere and a menu that champions fresh, local ingredients, it’s a must-visit for anyone craving authentic flavors by the sea. Their wood-fired pizzas are a standout, but don’t miss the seafood specials, especially the grilled catch of the day.
